65 students from Central, South, and Kohler High Schools visited county facilities and learned about local government in April & May. Students heard presentations and participated in simulations hosted by the county administrator, deputy county administrator, county board vice-chair, sheriff, youth justice workers, circuit court judge, district attorney, planning director, county clerk, county register of deeds, human resources staff, and county treasurer. The American Legion provided lunch. Positive Youth Development Educator Diana Hammer recruited schools to participate, taught pre-trip activities with classes at Central and Kohler, facilitated the mock county board supervisor lesson, and taught a debrief class at Kohler.
After the visit, students agreed that they had learned about:
- potential job opportunities,
- aspects of local government that affect them today, &
- aspects that will affect them in the future.
The majority stated their favorite activity of the day was the mock trial with Judge Sutkiewicz. They recommend making presentations more interactive next time.
